Character Information
Character Name: Beaker
Fandom: The Muppets

Character History:
  • Not much is known about Beaker before he was employed at Muppet Labs, though it can be assumed he’s in his early to mid 20s. Beaker attends college as a chemistry major. He enjoys doing lab work, so he figures that he’ll do that for a living. He graduates, and starts to look for work.
  • At this time, The Muppet Show has been on the air for about a year now, with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew starring in the Muppet Labs section.
  • Beaker stumbles across an ad for a laboratory assistant for Muppet Labs, for The Muppet Show. He’s intrigued by the idea of broadcasting scientific knowledge and research and applies for the job. However, he’s never watched The Muppet Show before, and has no idea what’s in store for him.
  • As the only applicant for the job, Beaker becomes a full-time lab assistant for Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. His initial perceptions of the job are shattered when he gets assaulted by a steel bunny and his head is temporarily deflated by Bunsonium.
  • The duo continue to test a variety of inventions such as edible paper clips, the automatic wastebasket, super adhesive, the pet converter, and more. With these demonstrations, Beaker is subjected to a lot of unfortunate mishaps, such as being electrocuted, eaten, shrunk, exploded, set aflame, and more. Fortunately, he’s a very hardy Muppet. Usually, with Bunsen’s help, he recovers quite quickly from these mishaps.
  • Beaker starts dabbling more in artistic endeavors, such as singing and features on the Muppet Show a few times (with varying success). Through this, he makes friends with the Swedish Chef and Animal. The three bond over the fact that many people find them incomprehensible.
  • Despite the lingering occupational hazard of working with Dr. Honeydew, Beaker has developed a crush on him. It’s probably due to the fact that Bunsen is one of the few people who actually understand what he’s saying most of the time, as well as his endearing absentmindedness. Said absentmindedness also happens to get Beaker hurt most of the time, but everyone has their flaws.
  • After The Muppet Show ends, he works with Bunsen independently until Muppets Tonight begins to air. Bunsen and Beaker basically do the same thing for Muppet Labs, but more of the experiments are staged for comedy purposes and to give Beaker a bit of a rest.
  • Here comes the Internet Age! Beaker works on his own song covers on Youtube, like Flowers on the Wall, Dust in the Wind, and Ode to Joy (again, with varying success). He teams up with the Muppet cast sometimes to help with these endeavors. He’s happy that he can be understood (more or less) and have normal conversations with more people.
  • While Beaker cultivates his social life on the Internet, Bunsen and Beaker work on Late Night With Miss Piggy as the resident scientists. Doesn’t every late night talk show have resident scientists? No? Well, it’s not like you can get rid of them--they’re here to stay, whether you like it or not.

Character Personality:
Upon meeting Beaker, the first thing someone would take note of is his nervous nature. He rarely speaks above a terrified squeak and doesn’t like talking to strangers. Not that it really matters, since most people don’t try to understand what he’s saying. Beaker’s perfectly content staying at home and using the Internet all day, where he can pursue his creative interests and actually communicate with other people in a meaningful way. If Beaker ever actually engages in any sort of social activity, he prefers having a friend to accompany him. Otherwise, he’ll spend all night hiding in his shell--literally. He’ll just stand in a corner and tuck his whole face into his shirt, pretending not to be there.

If someone actually tries to make friends with Beaker, however, they’ll find that he’s a very easy person to get along with. He supports his friends as best he can and tries to make them feel more confident in themselves, even if he can’t. He’ll even be willing to help them with the most outlandish ideas, as long as there isn’t any explicit danger about it. Like helping the Swedish Chef and Animal sing an incomprehensible rendition of Danny Boy.

Although he doesn’t really show it, Beaker is quite an intelligent Muppet and is very curious about science. He’s particularly interested in making new inventions (as long as he doesn’t get hurt while testing). His determination to continue learning and testing is probably the only thing that’s kept him alive through all the unfortunate mishaps. He may not enjoy talking about scientific theories and other erudite concepts as much as Bunsen, but he could carry a conversation about them, if he needs to.

One of his flaws is that he isn’t particularly assertive and isn’t good at standing up for himself. Even if he does fight back, he tends to give up quickly. He’d rather get hurt than cause any sort of conflict between him and his friends. However, in the unlikely event that he becomes extremely well armed or is being supported by many people, he’ll make sure to teach a lesson to those who’ve picked on him. Really--don’t be mean to him. You’ll probably regret it years from now.

Powers and Abilities:
The only thing remarkable about Beaker is his ability to shrug off almost lethal amounts of pain and suffering with little consequence, but that seems to be a trait shared among Muppets. Beaker has been electrocuted, lit on fire, shrunk, turned invisible, and even became a ghost at one point and has later been seen no worse for wear. He’ll definitely still feel the pain and will react to it, but after a few hours to a few days he’ll be perfectly fine physically. Additionally, Beaker is quite knowledgeable about many scientific topics, including (but not limited to) chemistry, engineering, and physics. As a result, he’s pretty good at tinkering with machinery and generally helping out in scientific/laboratory settings.

Also, his eyes light up if there’s an electric current running through him. Though this doesn’t really seem to be an ability as much an unfortunate side effect to being electrocuted.

[There’s a pause before the video terminates. A few moments later, a text post is uploaded.]

Hello, my name is Beaker. I’m looking for work as a lab assistant to any scientists in the district(s). I’ve had several years of experience working at Muppet Labs and I’m willing to help you test anything you throw at me! Please don’t actually throw things at me, unless it’s for an experiment. I guess it’s okay then.

Minimal occupational hazard prefered, but is definitely not necessary.

Please contact me if you’re interested! Interested in hiring me, I mean. But I guess if you want to hang out you can contact me about that, too. Writing advertisements is hard.

Third Person:
This...place doesn't look familiar at all, but it wouldn’t be the first time Bunsen has sent him to an unfamiliar place. Like that time when they were testing the teleporter, and Beaker sent him to the jungle. He had to run away from a group of angry gorillas for an hour before he was finally teleported back to the lab. That had to be it, right? He must’ve been testing something with Bunsen and forgot about it.

It looks a little bit like a jungle, anyhow. After pausing for thought, he begins to walk cautiously along the street, trying to keep an eye out for any rampaging gorillas. As much as he tries to quell the feeling, he can’t help but feel a little panicked. The sound of a twig snapping--obviously the approach of a deadly predator that could tear him to shreds. The soft call of a bird overhead--a vulture, calling the monsters to his soon-to-be corpse. Trembling, he puts a hand to his mouth, trying to prevent himself from freaking out too much.

If Bunsen were here, he’d probably be taking notes on the oddities he encountered, or acquainting himself with the local flora and fauna. He always tried to make the best of a situation, no matter what variables were presented to him. Maybe he would even hold his hand, reassuring Beaker that they would get out safely, that they would--

Something promptly smacks him in the face, interrupting his fantasy. Beaker lets out a shrill scream and flails his arms about, trying to get it off until he realizes it had been an overhanging branch. Embarrassed, he tucks his face into his shirt and scurries forward. Oh God. That was very, very loud. He must have alerted someone--or something--to his presence. Maybe a wolf. Or a giant spider. Or possibly a giant wolfspider.

Okay, he’s not going to panic. Panicking in this situation is a very bad idea. Not going to think about those sharp, serrated mandibles dripping with venom coming to cleave him in half.

He’s going to panic.

His pace quickens with his heartbeat until he breaks out into a sprint, screaming louder than before.
